Concierge Jobs

I wanted to perform research on this category because I had interest in what a concierge really does. I have been to hotels where a certain person or people did whatever asked of him-her. I remember the men dressed in suits much like toy soldiers wearing white gloves and top hats! They would open the doors to new patrons, bowing a hello.

To be quite honest, it has only been the last decade that I had even heard the word concierge! There are opportunities for a concierge to work virtually as well as in traditional settings (hotels, hospitals). It is up to the individual how services are performed.

What is a concierge?  The basic definition of a concierge is professional assistant. Dictionary.com had a different definition:

1.(especially in France) a person who has charge of the entrance of a building and is often the owner’s representative; doorkeeper.
2. a member of a hotel staff in charge of special services for guests, as arranging for theater tickets or tours.
3. an employee stationed in an apartment house lobby who screens visitors, controls operation of elevators, accepts deliveries to the tenants, etc.
4. a janitor.
5. Obsolete. a custodian or warden.
6. pertaining to or being medical care for which the patient pays the doctor an annual fee for special or extra services: concierge medicine;
concierge physicians.

In most instances a concierge is still associated with hotel guest services. When concierges were first introduced, they mostly worked for hotel chains, though that has changed quite a bit over the years. I found a resource on Amazon that instructs you on how to create your own concierge service called “Start your own Personal Concierge Service: your step-by-step guide to success.” You can get it for $9.99 on Kindle, or the paperback version is $17.16.

What does a concierge do?  In hotels or resorts, a concierge assists guests by performing various tasks such as making restaurant reservations, booking hotels, arranging for spa services, recommending night life hot spots, booking transportation (like taxi, limousines, airplanes, boats, etc.), coordinating porter service (luggage assistance …” According to Wikipedia.

How much training is necessary to become a concierge? According to Study.com, here are the necessaries to become certified as a concierge;

A concierge certificate program includes training in the areas of upscale food and beverage management, guest interactions, etiquette and risk management. Graduates may seek professional certification credentials through the National Concierge Association. Some years of work experience and passage of an examination are necessary.

Prerequisites: GED or high school diploma; a strong interest in customer service and some hospitality experience
Length of Study: One semester to complete.

How much does a concierge earn? According to Pay Scale, the median salary for a concierge in the U.S. is $12.59/hour. Years and experience in the industry does directly affect pay rate, as well as which company he-she works for. Entry level applicants earn 4 percent less on average than the median salary, where those with experience earn 14 percent more than the average salary. 62 percent of concierges are women and 38 percent are men.

Is it difficult to become a concierge? I would say, no. In the paragraphs above we learned that the certification to become a concierge could be completed within one semester.

Concluding Thoughts: With a bit of hard work and determination one could start a new career in a matter of months! Anything you desire in life can be accomplished with hard work and determination! Believe it and you can achieve it! If you don’t choose to open your own service, sign up under a host to begin your career. Much success on your journey!
